  Troubleshooting your CF GPS Receiver

Position fixing may not be available when this receiver is used near high-voltage wire, electronic equipment that generates electrical noise, or mobile phones in operation at a frequency of 1.5 GHz. The noise from PDA or PC may also deteriorate GPS signal reception.

In such a place where signals from GPS satellites are reflected by buildings, positions may not be accurately measured. If there is a significant difference in the result, we recommend moving to another place and retry the position fixing.

Under normal operating conditions, the EasyNav CF GPS can usually fix a position within 60 seconds. In case the receiver is unable to fix a position within 90 seconds, we recommend resetting the EasyNav CF GPS receiver unit by simply disconnecting the receiver from the Pocket PC and plugging it back in ten seconds later.

When left disconnected from the Pocket PC for a long period of time, a "cold start" will be automatically initiated before the next operation. This may cause position fixing to take longer. A "cold start" will also be initiated when the GPS receiver has moved far away from the previous fixing position (e.g., more than 500 km by air travel), or for other reasons that cause the receiver to not be able to fix a position within 5 minutes after power on.

PRECAUTIONS FOR YOUR CF GPS RECEIVER

  • Do not touch the connectors of the receiver with fingers or insert foreign objects; it may cause failure.
  • Do not put the receiver in a place exposed to direct sunlight for a long period of time; near heating equipment; a place that can become hot, or humid places, such as bathrooms.
  • Do not wet this receiver unit; otherwise a failure may be caused. If used in rain, fog, or snow, be careful not to wet its electrical connections.
  • Do not drop this receiver, subject it to severe impact, or place it upon a surface that vibrates; otherwise a failure may be caused.
  • Use a soft cloth to wipe dirt off receiver. If the dirt is severe, dampen a soft cloth with a diluted neutral detergent, wring it out, and wipe off. Do not use a spray-type detergent; highly volatile solvent, such as thinner and benzene; or a chemical cloth. Otherwise, deformation or discoloration may result.

GPS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

General

»   Q: I know which COM port I should use, but it keeps telling me: "Can't Open COM: Check to make sure no other applications are accessing this port."

A: Try stopping all other applications (especially GPSViewer or CEMonitor) before you start up EasyNav Navigator. On your Pocket PC, goto Start->Settings->System tab->Memory->Running Programs tab. Tap the "Stop All" button to stop all running programs. Now try restarting EasyNav Navigator and connecting to your COM port.

»   Q: Is there any way I can flush and reset my GPS device?"

A: Yes, there is a free utility called CEMonitor.
  1. Download the file and extract the folder. Copy the appropriate file for your processor (ARM, MIPS, or SH3) to your Pocket PC.
  2. On your Pocket PC, execute the file and it will install the program in your Program Files directory. You have to execute the program by going to the directory through File Explorer since it doesn't create any shortcuts for you.
  3. Now that you have it installed, stop all other programs so you don't have a COM port conflict. Goto the Memory manager and tap "Stop All".
  4. Go into Tools -> Port Settings and select the com port you think your GPS is set to. Set the protocol to "NMEA" and the baud rate to "4800" (unless you know what the baud rate should be).
  5. Then do Tools -> Connect if it didn't try to connect automatically.
  6. Make sure you can see either NMEA or SiRF in the bottom left corner of the screen. If you can't, go back to step 1 and try the next COM port.
  7. Goto View -> Development and you should see the GPS data if it's working correctly.
  8. Goto View -> Signal and you can see the position of the different satellites. Some of the satellites will turn green once you get a lock.
  9. If you want to reset the GPS device, goto Tools->Command and select "Factory reset". Then tap "OK".
  10. If you have used the GPS device with another GPS software, goto Tools->Command and select "NMEA". Then tap "OK" to enable the default NMEA sentences.
»   Q: EasyNav Navigator can detect my GPS and has satellites in view, but I've waited over 15 minutes in the same place with open sky and it still will not get a lock.

A: The GPS may be caught in a deadlocked state. Try resetting the GPS with CEMonitor (see above).

Compact Flash GPS Receivers (PMG-205/220/260/270/280)

»   Q: I can see a few satellites with my GPS receiver, but it never acquires a fix on my location.

A: Try using the external antenna if you have one. Once you get a fix, can try taking out the antenna and see if it maintains the fix. Also, if you are driving, try stopping in a parking lot or pulling over until you get the fix.

Keep in mind that when using a GPS receiver with EasyNav Navigator for the first time, it can take anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes for the GPS receiver to locate the satellites in orbit. Once initialized, the GPS unit should be able to track satellite signals in 60 seconds or less in the future under ideal conditions.

When obtaining a position fix, it is best to remain stationary in an open area with an unobstructed view to the sky. Trees, buildings, and other obstacles are capable of blocking the satellite signals. We recommend attaching an external booster antenna to the GPS when you anticipate usage in areas with poor signal reception. Bear in mind that GPS devices will not work indoors, or when shielded by metals, e.g., certain windshields tinted with metal coatings.

If that does not work, try resetting the GPS with CEMonitor (see above, under "General").

»   Q: Can I use the CF GPS receiver with my laptop?

A: Yes. You will need a CF-PCMCIA adapter to plug the GPS receiver into your laptop's PCMCIA port and a map software that works on the laptop.

Auto/Mouse GPS Receivers (PMG-200/202)

»   Q: I have a Toshiba e330/e335/e740/e750 Pocket PC, and every time I connect the GPS, it says: "Unidentified USB Device. enter the name of the device driver. For information, see the device manufacturer's documentation."

A: You have to install a driver on your Toshiba before using the GPS receiver. Please:
  1. Insert Disc1 into your CD-ROM drive on your computer.
  2. On your CD-ROM drive, browse to the folder "\GPS Diagnostics\PMG-200\WinCE Driver". If your CD-ROM drive letter is "D:", the path is:
    • D:\GPS Diagnostics\PMG-200\WinCE Driver
  3. Copy this folder from the CD-ROM folder to anywhere on your Pocket PC.
  4. On your Pocket PC, tap the USBSER.ARM.CAB file in the "WinCE Driver" folder to install the driver.
  5. If you have a Toshiba e355, e750, or e755 with Windows Mobile 2003, tap <Yes> to continue if you get a warning about the operating system compatibility.
  6. Soft reset your Pocket PC.
    • e330/e335/e355 owners: press the reset button on the back of your Pocket PC.
    • e740/e750/e755 owners, press the button in the small pinhole on the left side of your Pocket PC.

A: Make sure you do not have Y-cable connected to your Pocket PC when you soft reset the Pocket PC.
  1. Disconnect the Y-cable from the Pocket PC.
  2. Soft reset the Pocket PC.
  3. Reconnect the Y-cable. Make sure the red LED on the car charger is on. Make sure the green LED on the mouse GPS is on or blinking.
  4. Start EasyNav Navigator by tapping Start->EasyNav Navigator.
  5. Tap "Configure GPS". Select COM1 from the drop-down list.
»   Q: I have a Toshiba Pocket PC, and when I start my car, the halo around the red arrow on the Navigate screen stop blinking.

A: For some cars, starting the engine with the Y-cable attached to the Toshiba will send a power surge to the Pocket PC causing it to stop refreshing the GPS data. If this happens, simply reselect the COM port on the Config GPS screen and the Toshiba will display the current GPS data again.

»   Q: I have a T-Mobile/XDA/Siemens Pocket PC Phone and when I try to connect to the GPS on COM1, it keeps telling me: "Can't Open COM1: Check to make sure no other applications are accessing this port."

A: You have to turn off the "Receive Beam" feature first.
  1. Go to Start->Settings. Click on the "Connections" tab.
  2. Open the "Beam" manager.
  3. Uncheck the checkbox that says "Receive all incoming..."
  4. Restart EasyNav Navigator and try using COM1 to connect to the GPS.
If that doesn't work, try disabling the ActiveSync auto sync feature:
  1. Go to Start->ActiveSync.
  2. Go to the Tools->Options on the menu bar.
  3. Uncheck the box that begins "Enable synchronization when cradled..."
You can try re-checking the box after you get a GPS lock.

»   Q: I use an external keyboard and when I try to connect to the GPS on COM1, it keeps telling me: "Can't Open COM1: Check to make sure no other applications are accessing this port."?

A: Try uninstalling the keyboard software. The keyboard software thinks the GPS is a keyboard when you connect it and takes up the COM port. So far, this is the only known way to avoid a COM port conflict with the GPS.
